The Republic of Moldova confronts one of the highest levels of labour migration. With over one million Moldovan citizens living abroad, the issue of diaspora and returning migrants is high on the political agenda. The shrinking working-age population is dramatic compared to the fact that the number of people of retirement age is almost constant, or even slightly increasing. This creates major risks for economic growth. Moldova’s current population is 2.6 million, more than half of whom live in rural areas. Nearly a million of the country’s population have left in search of better living conditions.
