Descriere: Several demographic phenomena are behind the process of population ageing in Moldova: low fertility, high mortality of working age population and emigration. Emigration and high mortality rate among middle-age people, particularly men lead to the quick loss of a younger population of Moldova and thus are behind the phenomenon of accelerated ageing of its population. In this context, the contributions to the Social Fund are scarce and irregular, that leads to the continuous budgetary deficit of the National Office of Social Insurance. The situation is potentially unsettled as the existing "chimerical" system lacks basic principles of equity, adequacy and suslainability. Meanwhile, an increased number of persons belonging to the baby boom generation will be reaching the retirement age.
